Types of Companies in Norway
Foreign citizens can register a business in Norway in several legal forms.
Under Norwegian law, AS and ASA companies with more than 30 employees are required to have at least one employee-elected representative on the board of directors. If the company has more than 50 employees, both genders must be represented on the board.
Company Registration Procedure
Registration of legal entities in Norway is carried out through the Register of Business Enterprises (Foretaksregisteret), administered by the Brønnøysund Register Centre (Brønnøysundregistrene). Documents can be submitted electronically through the government portal Altinn. The application for registration must be filed within three months of signing the memorandum of association.
Documents and KYC
The shareholders and directors provide their identity documents, address confirmations and a completed and signed KYC form.
Bank account and share capital
A bank account is opened in a Norwegian bank, the share capital is deposited and the bank issues a confirmation of the deposit.
Memorandum and articles
The memorandum of association (stiftelsesdokument) and articles of association (vedtekter) are prepared.
Filing via Altinn
The documents are submitted to Brønnøysundregistrene via Altinn.
Organisation number
The company receives its organisation number.
Tax registration
The company is registered with the tax authorities (Skatteetaten).
VAT number
COREDO obtains the company’s VAT number as part of the full package.
An AS requires at least one shareholder and a board of directors.
Registration Timeline
The company registration process in Norway takes from 5 business days to 3–4 weeks, depending on the legal form, completeness of the submitted documents, and workload of the registration authority. Electronic filing through Altinn typically accelerates the process. With COREDO, the entire process — company incorporation, opening a bank account and obtaining a VAT number — takes approximately 4 weeks, depending on the timely and prompt submission of the necessary documents.
